DEPARMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
LBS COLLEGE OF ARTS, SCIENCE AND COMMERECE, SATARA

Plight of the illiterate masses was heart-rending. This led Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe to open a secondary school (Bhavani Highschool) first and Lal Bahadur Shastri College later in Satara in the year 1967 with a modest number of students (167).
A college run by another educational institute was out to educate the first generation of free India. Since that college was situated on the outskirts and far from the main oily, parents were unwilling to send their daughters to college.
Though distance was one of the main hurdles, there were many others such as lack of awareness, orthodox Thinking, financial poverty S Jack of transport facility. Dr. Bapuji Salunkhe gave a serious thought and determined to gel over all these difficulties by opening this college in the midst of the city. The location of the college is critical in many respects. Since it is located In the midst of thickly populated residential zones, it does not have enough area to make available play-grounds, running track, a big enough parking facility, a big enough botanical garden and spacious campus. Convenience especially of working students, girls students, girl-students from Muslim and backward families were given priority above every thing else. Then existing college run by another educational institute was and still is a day college. Lal Bahadur Shastri college started functioning as a morning college {Arts and Commerce wings) for the convenience of the working students, the girls and students commuting from neighbouring villages.
The microbiology department was established in 1983 with well equipped laboratory and qualified teachers were appointed from the beginning.
